Unlock The World And Celebrate UN Language Days

The United Nations Language Days offer a captivating celebration of the world's rich tapestry of languages and the power they wield in fostering global understanding and cooperation.

United Nations Language Days, observed on separate occasions throughout the year, spotlight the six official languages of the UN: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. These days provide a unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in the beauty, nuances and significance of each language, enriching our understanding of the global community we are part of. Each Language Day is a journey into the heart of a culture, a chance to explore its history, traditions and contributions to the world.

The United Nations Language Days also remind us of the role language plays in diplomacy, communication and building bridges between nations. In a world that is increasingly interconnected, the ability to communicate across languages is a powerful tool for promoting peace, understanding and collaboration.

The UN celebrated the first ever Chinese Language Day on Friday 12 November 2010, in an bid to raise awareness and respect for the six official working languages of the organisation. With up to 1.4 billion people speaking Chinese, it is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world.

The UN also celebrate its five other official languages to help promote multilingualism and cultural diversity.

The dates for the Language Days were selected for their symbolic or historic significance in relation to each language. Although the first Chinese Language Day was celebrated on 12 November, it will be observed on 20 April from 2011, to mark the invention of Chinese characters by Cangjie.

The other UN Language Days are:

  • French Language Day on the 20 March

  • English Language Day on the 23 April

  • Spanish Language Day on the 23 April

  • Russian Language Day on the 6 June

  • Arabic Language Day on the 18 December.

As language learners, we are ambassadors of cultural exchange and understanding.
