Happy Hogmanay!

Hogmanay is Scotland's spirited New Year celebration and is celebrated as the clock strikes midnight on the 31st of December. This celebration marks the transition from the old year to the new, embracing age-old traditions and modern revelry with equal enthusiasm.

The festivities commence on the 31st of December, captivating the entire nation from dusk till dawn on the 1st of January. In some areas, the jubilation can even extend to the 2nd or 3rd of January, making it a truly extended celebration. That is some party!

One of the most traditional Hogmanay customs is the tradition of ‘first-footing’. It's a belief that the first person to enter a home after the stroke of midnight brings luck for the upcoming year. This symbolic gesture is accompanied by small gifts, embodying well-wishes and blessings. As the threshold is crossed, the promise of good fortune for the household takes root.

A tradition woven into Hogmanay that has transcended borders is the singing of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ at the stroke of midnight. This timeless melody, penned by Scottish poet Robert Burns, symbolizes unity and friendship. Its lyrics resonate with people worldwide, making it a universal anthem for bidding farewell to the old year and embracing the new.

The origins of the name Hogmanay are not certain. Some theories trace it back to the French hoguinané, meaning ‘a gift at New Year’, while others suggest it might have evolved from the Scandinavian word hoggo-nott, referring to the last night of the year.

The heart of Hogmanay beats strongest in Edinburgh, where the city hosts one of the world's most iconic New Year's celebrations. The festivities span four days and encompass an array of attractions, from music and dance to street theatre and concerts. The city pulses with energy as people from around the globe gather to partake in the jubilant atmosphere.
