Dolphins mimic sounds to develop 'human' language

According to a marine biologist, the complex calls of wild dolphins display the early signs of true language development. Vincent Janik, from the University of St. Andrews, has recorded the underwater whistles of a pod swimming in Scotland's Moray Firth.

Members of the pod are able to copy other's calls within seconds of first hearing it. Janik believes that this ‘vocal matching’, which is rare among animals, is a way of identifying individuals within the group and was a early feature in the evolution of human language.
