Ancient Language Comes To Life In Newly Completed Dictionary

A 21-volume dictionary of the ancient language of Ancient Mesopotamia, as well as its Babylonian and Assyrian dialects, has finally been completed after 90 years.

Scholars from the University of Chicago deciphered the language which was preserved on clay tablets and on stone inscriptions, in order to create the dictionary which has 28,000 words.

The language of Ancient Mesopotamia was that spoken by Sargon the Great, King of Akkad in the 24th century B.C. which he used to command what is said to be the world’s first empire, and that which Hammurabi used around 1700 B.C.

It was one of the first works to document the law and is said to contain the first masterpiece of literature.
