Police Officers Learn Sign Language

Police officers and staff at the Avon and Somerset police force have been learning sign language to help deaf victims to communicate better. The officers were taught by British Sign Language tutors and had learnt phrases, the alphabet and directions.

Over 40 officers and staff members from Avon and Somerset police have undergone training in basic sign language to enhance their communication skills with the deaf community in east Somerset. The training, which covered phrases, directions, and the alphabet, was provided by British Sign Language tutors from the Centre for Deaf People in Bristol. Additionally, 39 more staff members have completed a three-hour introduction to sign language.
