Aboriginal Language To Be Revived With New Dictionary

The Aboriginal traditional language of Yaygirr which is spoken in the NSW North coast of Australia, is to have its own dictionary and grammar guide. It took more than six years of research to produce the Yaygirr dictionary which contains about 1000 words, maps and a description of the way the language works. The dictionary was produced by the Muurrbay Aboriginal Language Centre as a way to revive the Yaygirr language.

It is also hoped that it will help people to understand a bit more about the language and potentially encourage adults to pass it onto their children. One of the producers of the dictionary from the Language Centre said "The most important thing, really, is that in this area people are able to learn more about their language, get that recognition that that is their language and that's the language of that country."
