This is the day when, traditionally in the West, people send ‘Valentines’ or love poems and cards, as an expression of their love for each other.   The origins of this day can be traced to the Roman festival of Lupercus, the god of fertility.   Much later, it is thought that a Bishop Valentine was beheaded for carrying out marriage ceremonies against the will of the Emporer.   St. Valentine became the patron saint for lovers.   Even during Victorian times, and certainly since the 19 th century, the day  has grown into a massive event and is very commercial with people  giving flowers, chocolates, teddy bears, jewellery and other special gifts – in fact, anything to do with love hearts and cupids!

Valentine’s Day is also celebrated around the world. In Wales, you can give your loved one a beautiful carved wooden love spoon.   In Finland and Estonia, this day marks the day that you remember all your friends more than just your loved ones. In Japan and South Korea for instance, women give hand-made chocolates to men!

It makes light of the cultural barriers which can happen when an English-speaking person tries to communicate or do business with a Chinese-speaking person. The play is in English and Mandarin Chinese.

With global travel and global business prevalent in today’s world, it is important to understand other cultures and at least try to speak a little of the language. Learning the language and culture of a country creates a connection and relationship with those you meet along the way. ‘Chinglish’ explores the Chinese culture and touches upon common misunderstandings between English-speakers and Chinese-speakers.

According to the study results, babies who are born into bilingual households have a greater ability to keep learning languages as they get older. The children quickly learn that there are two words for the same object and consistent confirmation of this by hearing two languages at home, helps the children to become bilingual for longer.

So, it really is worth teaching and/or speaking a second language to your children when they are very young!

Also known as Hindi Diwas, this date marks the day when Hindi became the official language of India. It was first acknowledged on the 14th September 1949 when it was spoken during a United Nations conference in New York.

Many schools and colleges in India use the English language as part of their curriculum as it is an international language. Despite this, the Hindi language is included in the syllabus and many students are taking up the language in their studies. The national anthem of India is in Hindi.
