Venice Carnival, Italy

The Venice Carnival in Venice, Italy is known for its masks and is a magical spectacular a couple of weeks before Lent begins (on Ash Wednesday). This year the carnival begins on the 11th February. Traditionally, meat, eggs and butter were meant to be used up before the fasting of Lent began. The celebration and festivities before Lent gave way to many carnivals around the world, including the Venice Carnival. What makes this carnival memorable though are the costumes and, in particular, masks worn by its patrons.
Venice Film Festival 2011

It’s good to see so many non-English speaking films, actors & directors competing at the Venice Film Festival. Winners were announced on 10 September 2011 and include:
- the Golden Lion award for the best film Faust, a German legend, by the Russian director Alexander Sokurov
- the Silver Lion award for the best director Shangjun Cai (China – Hong Kong) for the film Ren Shan Ren Hai (People Mountain People Sea)
- best actress to Danie Yip from Hong Kong in A Simple Life. Read more
Lions at the Venice Film Festival

The ‘Lions’ will come out again at the 66th Venice Film Festival (La Biennale di Venezia) in Italy between 2 and 12 September 2009. The ‘Lions’ are the Lion Awards given to the films within different categories at this prestigious film event. The Golden Lion is given for Best Film. Read more

We’ve gone all Italian this week! This year’s UEFA Champions League Final will be held in the Stadio Olimpico, Rome on the 27th May 2009. FC Barcelona will play Manchester United FC in what could be an explosive football match.
