Some
premium is attached to having a second language that would be of
benefit in a job
Over
270 companies responded to Reed's first ever Language Skills Survey,
a unique insight into the role of languages in the workplace.
The five languages,
other than English, that are most important to organisations across
the UK are French, German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch.
Generally, organisations
in the North of England attach more importance to second languages
than organisations in the London area.
Across a majority
of sectors, customer services departments used languages the most,
although there were exceptions in the manufacturing and retail sectors.
Of language
services used by organisations across the UK, translation services
were the most commonly used, particularly in the Midlands Region.
Overall, 39%
of respondents felt that the English language had gained ground
or was wholly dominant in their organisation.

39%
of respondents would attach some degree of premium to a candidate
having a second language that was of benefit in their job. The average
premium attached to a second language was 8%, although this does
vary from sector to sector.
Firms in the
North of England are most generous in the premiums they attach to
a second language, while firms in the Wales and South West region
are least likely to attach any premium at all.
