Laurel and Hardy couldn’t speak any foreign languages, so had voice coaching, and often used native language speaking supporting cast members. These language versions helped to boost their popularity internationally. Pardon Us was reshot in all four foreign languages. Chickens Come Home, Blotto and Below Zero were re-filmed in French and Spanish.

As it will soon be Easter, why not give a language gift instead of chocolate? Easter is celebrated every year usually sometime between late March and late April, depending on the date of the full moon. This year it falls on 4 April 2010.

Easter is an important religious festival in the Christian calendar. Christians believe that Jesus was resurrected from the dead three days after his crucifixion and they celebrate his resurrection on Easter Sunday (also known as Easter Day). Easter also marks the end of Lent which is traditionally the time to give up something in penance.

Christians and non-Christians alike celebrate Easter in other ways – mostly by eating lots and lots of chocolate! This tradition started in Germany, where the Easter Bunny was said to deliver a basket of eggs to children the night before Easter. Today, this has become a huge commercial tradition with people giving out chocolate eggs to friends and family on Easter Sunday, particularly in English-speaking countries such as the UK, United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Some European countries also follow this tradition giving chocolate animals of all descriptions (chickens, birds or fish). Many Eastern European countries still decorate eggs for Easter.

Why not give a language gift this Easter? We have a great selection of gifts – language courses, foreign language films, world music and even magnetic poetry so you can say Happy Easter to everyone in your house in another language!

Give a very different gift this Easter.

February 14 is Valentine’s Day (also known as Saint Valentine’s Day). This is the day when, traditionally in the West, people send ‘Valentines’ or love poems and cards, as an expression of their love for each other. The origins of this day can be traced to the Roman festival of Lupercus, the god of fertility. Much later, it is thought that a Bishop Valentine was beheaded for carrying out marriage ceremonies against the will of the Emporer. St. Valentine became the patron saint for lovers. Even during Victorian times, and certainly since the 19 th century, the day has grown into a massive event and is very commercial with people giving flowers, chocolates, teddy bears, jewellery and other special gifts – in fact, anything to do with love hearts and cupids!

Valentine’s Day is also celebrated around the world. In Wales, you can give your loved one a beautiful carved wooden love spoon. In Finland and Estonia, this day marks the day that you remember all your friends more than just your loved ones. In Japan and South Korea for instance, women give hand-made chocolates to men!

If you want to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day with a more unusual gift, then give the language of love! The gift will last all year long – well past 14 February! It would be very romantic to hear your loved one talking to you in French or Italian next Valentine’s Day. We have a great selection of gifts – language courses, DVDs, music CDs and even magnetic poetry so you can leave messages of love all over the house.

Take a look at our Language Advantage Gift Shop and give a very different gift to your Valentine>>

The workshop will explore the business challenges faced by existing UK exporters to France and will help exporters discover practical solutions and business advice to overcome potential language, communication and cultural barriers when trading in the French market.

France and the UK are long-term trading partners. Exports to France amount to c.£20 billion per year and account for nearly 10% of UK visible exports worldwide. Despite a wealth of trading opportunity across a range of business sectors, many British companies find France one of the more challenging EU markets to enter.

The European Day of Languages is on 26 September each year. Millions of people across 45 countries in Europe take part in activities to celebrate linguistic diversity and the benefits of being able to speak another language. Many people – young and old – are encouraged to take up a language, or take special pride in their existing language skills. Those responsible for providing access to language learning are encouraged to make it easier for people to learn a range of languages, and to support policy initiatives to promote languages.

Why do we need a European Day of Languages?

While many people agree that everyone should be able to speak another language, in many countries in Europe only about half can converse in a language other than their own. There have never been more opportunities to work or study in a different European country – but lack of language competence prevents many people from taking advantage of them. Globalisation and patterns of business ownership mean that citizens increasingly need foreign language skills to work effectively within their own countries. Europe is rich in languages – there are over 200 European languages and many more spoken by citizens whose family origin is from other continents. This is an important resource to be recognised, used and cherished. Language learning brings benefits to young and old – you are never too old to learn a language and to enjoy the opportunities it opens up. Learning other peoples’ languages is a way of helping us to understand each other better and overcome our cultural differences.

What are the aims of the European Day of Languages?

The Council of Europe has declared 26 September an annual European Day of Languages, following the success of the European Year of Languages in 2001:

to alert the public to the importance of language learning

to increase awareness and appreciation of ALL the languages spoken in Europe

to encourage lifelong language learning.

To find out about events across Europe for the European Day of Languages, visit the official European Day of Languages website>>

Get the language advantage. Learn to speak an European language. Get your competitive advantage.
