Taiwan has seen a boom in the trade of Chinese language books in recent years. Imported and published books banned by the Chinese government in China for containing what it deems to be, sensitive subjects, can be easily bought in Taiwan. Chinese tourists and students go to Taiwan and freely buy the banned books in the Taiwanese bookshops or book exhibitions.

Spanish Language TV Channel Launched In Iran

The Middle Eastern country of Iran has just launched a Spanish language TV Channel, called Hispan TV. Iran has allies in Latin America particularly with Venezuela and Cuba. Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, hopes that the channel would ‘become a public discussion forum’.

Lack Of Language Skills Is Damaging UK Businesses

A recent survey by the office workspace giant, Regus, has found that a large percentage of UK businesses do not believe it is necessary to have fluent local language skills in order to have successful overseas business. This perception is despite an increasing number of UK businesses already trading with the overseas market or willing to do so. With the current global economic climate it is essential that firms speak their customers’ language in order to be competitive.

Footballers Encourage Pupils To Learn French

Two footballers from the Scottish Premier League are encouraging students at a local school in Inverness to learn French. French players Gregory Tade and Kenny Gillet who play for the Inverness Caledonian Thistles in Scotland, were invited by the school to help pupils learn to speak the French language. Their presence at the school and encouragement have boosted the pupils’ interest in learning the French language.

Do you consider yourself a ‘Madame’ or a ‘Mademoiselle’? A ‘Senorita’ or ‘Signorina’? Well, it doesn’t matter in the French language anymore as a town in Western France (Cesson-Sevigne) has banned the word ‘Mademoiselle’ (or ‘Miss’ – UK equivalent) from all of its official documents. The reason for this is that the town’s community believes that women should not be defined by their status anymore. Men have always been addressed as ‘Monsieur’ once they become teenagers.
